#Bendgate & #Hairgate of the Iphone 6- Jokes or Crisis?

Apple Inc. rules the realm of the modern day smartphone, and creates and bends its own rules, proving its dominance position with its Apple products.
Last month, the newest smartphone, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus were released, which lead to a new round of strom on social media. However, the high mention on social media this time seems not so good. 

One of the biggest discussions was caused by a few iPhone 6 Plus owners reported that phones would become warped in their front pockets, Lewis Hilsenteger of YouTube channel Unbox Therapy carried out an iPhone 6 bend test “for the sake of science”. Here is the video that set the standard for “Bendgate” that currently has nearly 55 Million views and counting:  

This video rapidly went viral and sparked a flurry of parodies on Twitter with the hashtag #bendgate. A number of twitter users and technology blogs have been posting images and videos of "bent" iPhones. Whether the video is true or not, Apple couldn’t stop people making fun of it and it kindly turned into a joke on social media. 

Social media users were not alone in poking fun. Apple arch-rival Samsung and LG smartly made use of the flaw to promote its own products. 

Other companies, like chocolate brand Kit Kat and U.S. potato chip firm Pringles also promptly released adverts cracking jokes about bent iPhones.

As a result of news of bending and faulting mobile software, Apple’s stock fell around 4 percent, leading a broader decline in technology shares. The fall in shares wiped close to $23bn off its stock market value.

Although Apple released a consumer report to defend its manufacturing standards and said bending "is extremely rare" with normal use of an iPhone, #Bendgate has been overblown by the media, but that doesn’t mean it’s over yet. Apple has been hit by a new complaint on October- that the handset traps users' hair or beards when they make calls. Hairgate appears to be largely another non-issue that is simply the latest joke surrounding the iPhone 6 on social networks, but some users do report the seam between the front bezel and aluminum back of the iPhone 6 causing their hair to get yanked out. 

Twitter users have made #hairgate a rising social media trend, leading major news outlets to pounce on the story. Then Gillette was quick to tweet: "Your phone may be smarter than ever, but leave the shaving to the experts.", which instantly caught people’s attention.

On the one hand, some may think Bendgate and hairgate just jokes and Apple sucessfully leads a big discussion on social media. On the other hand, it also could be the PR nightmare for Apple. It even provided heaven-sent marketing opportunity for other companies.  

These are not the only problem users complained, like the problem of iOS 8 update and privacy bug of iCloud let many people – fans and conspiracy theorists alike – begin to doubt Apple’s product reliability. That’s in no small part due to ‘antennagate’, when the iPhone 4 would lose network signal when held by the lower-left corner. 

Even though Apple still dominates the market of smartphone so far, it cannot guarantee customers trust it forever if more “gates” apprear about their products. Listening to people’s needs, perfecting technologies carefully and making change on time are Apple really needs to do.
